A background check is a tool that helps companies and organizations decide whether the applicant would be a fit for a particular position. Background checks may contain various components including criminal history, driving records, independent verification of education or employment, etc. Applicants will always need to sign an FCRA-compliant authorization form before a background check is conducted.
This depends on the industry of the company, as well as the type of position that is being offered. There is no “one-size-fits-all” background check, and we like to take a consultative approach to determine which type of background check makes the most sense, based on our client’s specific needs.
The turnaround time (TAT) for a pre-employment background check will vary based upon a number of factors, although most are completed within one to three business days. Generally speaking, a background check for employment may show identity verification, employment verification, credit history, driver’s history, criminal records, education confirmation, and more.
Under the FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act), the only records that can be reported that are more than seven years are criminal convictions (and Bankruptcies can be reported for ten years). However certain states and jurisdictions prohibit even criminal convictions from being reported that are more than seven years. For this reason, “best practices” generally only look back seven years.
Information that is revealed in a criminal background check generally includes felony and misdemeanor criminal convictions, infractions, and any pending criminal cases. Criminal background checks also report history of incarceration as an adult, active warrants, and whether the individual is on any of a number of “watch lists” such as the National Sex Offender Registry, OFAC and many others.

Pre-employment screening is simply an employment background check that is performed as a condition for an employment offer to be successfully secured. Employers, when extending an employment offer, should always use language such as, “your start date is MM/DD/YYYY, contingent upon the completion of a successful background check.”
A good “rule of thumb” is a background check costs less than one day of compensation. However, in those cases where it is somewhat more (as certain jurisdictions like New York are more expensive to obtain criminal records), the cost still pales in comparison to the wages that will be paid to “someone who should never have even been hired,” due to their dangerous background history.
Background checks should be tailored to mitigate risk for the position that is being filled, and the company that is doing the hiring. It can include various components, such as criminal history, driving records, verification of education, employment, references, etc., compliant social media checks, employment credit reports, and should always check various “watch lists,” particularly Sex Offenders and OFAC.
Although background checks are generally only performed on applicants who have a contingent job offer, sometimes employers perform them on all candidates that reach a certain stage of the interview process. So having a background check performed does not always translate into actually getting the job.
